Dewsbury Arcade

The colour parlour is warm and welcoming with the design background inspired by the tiled threshold mosaics to each shopfront. A sketch of Dewsbury Town Hall represents the fine Victorian and Edwardian buildings that make up the conservation area.

A ribbon of blue flows across the design as a reference to the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal, references are also made to the railway and the local coal mines. A tree represents the surrounding Yorkshire countryside juxtaposed with a railway track. The centre of the design as well as containing human figure forms also contains rolls or “bolts” of Shoddy and Mungo, the recycled wool industries that once thrived in Dewsbury.

The diverse cultural population are represented by a series of human figure forms. The colours of the figures are a metaphor for foods and spices that have mingled from all over the world to paint a visual mood of diversity.
