Broward County Convention Centre

Flora and Fauna – Broward County Convention Centre, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USAThis project comprises 26,000 square feet (2,420 square metres) of terrazzo flooring with brass lettering and aluminium strip inlays, using 55 tons of terrazzo and mixed recycled aggregate.

Inspired by the Caribbean, the design features vibrant colours, organic shapes, and fluid forms that evoke refractions and reflections in flowing water, coral reefs, schools of fish, and navigational symbols—elements that reflect the region’s deep connection to the sea.

I collaborated with local poet Darius Daughtry, who created original poems that are inlaid into the terrazzo using brass lettering.

The terrazzo incorporates a rich mix of coloured marble and stone sourced from Italy, China, and the USA. Materials include turquoise and onyx, as well as recycled elements such as glass, mirror, porcelain, and concrete, along with locally sourced mother-of-pearl shells, referencing the site’s location on the Atlantic Ocean.
